I have an Windows XP Mode Virtual drive that I had somehow managed to migrate to a newer laptop. I had it working fine, as long as I had the USB drive connected to the laptop prior to opening the Virtual Machines folder. The drive also had a name different from 'Windows XP Mode'. I further created a new 'Windows XP Mode' drive on the C drive.

I would also like to suggest you temporarily disable Integration Features to check if Windows XP Mode can be started normally. Method 2: Try leaving the password section blank and see if the XPMUSER can be accessed. If the issue persists, you can try accessing Windows XP. I had previously removed the password in the virtual pc control panel and enabled. Using the username XPMUser no password I tried works.
On one occasion, I wanted to use the newer generic C drive version without having the USB drive connected. Now when I want to use the external drive again, it no longer shows up in the Virtual Machine folder. I am assuming that it has something to do with the vmcx or vhd files, but I am not sure what I need to do to get it back again. Any help will be greatly appreciated!
This is also my first post here.
